wpd’s first Japanese onshore wind project, the Higashi Izu Furusato Wind Power Plant in Shizuoka Prefecture officially reached commercial operation (COD) on June 1, 2026, within the initially set project targets, reflecting wpd’s strong project management and execution capabilities.
Developed by Higashi Izu Wind Power Godo Kaisha, a joint venture between wpd and the GPSS Group, the project is located along a mountainous coastal ridge approximately 120 km southwest of Tokyo. Construction was carried out by Achiha Co., Ltd., using specialized equipment designed for steep terrain, enabling the project to be implemented under technically demanding conditions.
The wind farm has an installed capacity of 7.48 MW and consists of three Enercon wind turbines. Electricity generated by the facility will be supplied under a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) to Nomura Real Estate Development Co., Ltd. (Nomura Real Estate), via the electricity supplier NF Power Services Co., Ltd. (NFPS). The company plans to use green electricity to power its new headquarters building in Tokyo, contributing to its decarbonization goals.
At a time of rising electricity prices and increasing market volatility, corporate PPAs are becoming an increasingly important option for companies seeking greater cost stability. The Higashi Izu Furusato project reflects this trend by directly linking renewable power generation with corporate demand.
As Japan continues to pursue its decarbonization and energy security objectives, projects like Higashi Izu Furusato demonstrate wpd’s commitment to supporting the country’s efforts to strengthen energy independence through the expansion of domestically generated renewable energy.
Björn Nullmeyer, CFO wpd:
„We are delighted and proud that with the commissioning of the Higashi Izu project, not only the first project for wpd in Japan, but also the first project with an Asian wpd collaboration has been successfully realised. Our special thanks go to all the project partners involved and to our teams. For us, this is a further consistent step, alongside our large IPP portfolio in Taiwan, to keenly expand our APAC activities.”
With operations now underway, the Higashi Izu Furusato Wind Power Plant stands as a strong example of how international expertise and local partnerships can deliver reliable and economically viable renewable energy solutions, while supporting regional sustainability efforts and the broader transition toward carbon neutrality.
